QUANTUM

Welcome! We are carrying out research in the field of quantum optics and quantum many-body systems using ultracold atomic and molecular quantum gases at the Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics and the Ludwig-Maximilians University.

First BEC on the Boson experiment.

30 Mar '10 - after some time of rebuilding the basic setup, we are happy to welcome the condensate phase back in our lab.

When the interactions between atoms in a gas of particles become increasingly attractive, one expects the gas to intuitively shrink in size. Here we report that a fermionic quantum gas in a a lattice can actually expand for increasing attractive interactions. Science 327, 1621 (2010)

We have investigated the non-equilibrium dynamics in tunnel coupled 1D Bose-liquids, extending the famous Landau-Zener problem to a many-body setting. arXiv:1003.4956

Using the collapses and revivals of a coherent matter wave field we were able to reveal the number statistics of the quantum field and the presence of effective coherent multi-particle interactions in an optical lattice. arXiv:0911.5066

First BEC 7 Weeks after Move!

22 Oct '09 - Following our move to Munich the Single Atoms team at MPQ has made our first Munich Bose-Einstein Condensate (only 7 weeks after the move).

Sep '09. The move from Mainz to Munich is completed and all experiments have arrived at their new homes. The lab renovations are also almost complete and we can begin to setup the experiments again, soon.

Check out some photos from the move here!

We have mapped out the phase diagram of a superfluid in a 3D optical lattice and validated the quantum simulation using QMC calculations. Read more: arxiv:0905.4882

Using electromagnetically induced transparency we have stored a pulse of light in an atomic Mott insulator for over 200 ms. Read more: Phys. Rev. Lett., 103, 033003 (2009).
